Detailed Description: SOFIA, PLOVDIV, RILA MONASTERY

1st day: Early departure from Varna to Plovdiv. Founded in the place of a prehistoric village from the second millennium BC, Plovdiv is picturesquely situated on the banks of the river Maritsa. The old town - a real open-air museum with its beautifully decorated houses, is an image of typical Bulgarian style in architecture during 18th and 19th centuries. A visit to St. Constantine and Helena church. Lunch. After a short break in the winter resort Borovets, we start for Rila Monastery. Dinner. Overnight accommodation.
2nd day: Breakfast. A visit to the monastery, founded in 10th century by a monk St. Ivan Rilsky. Over the years the monastery took great part in the Bulgarian history as an important cultural and spiritual centre. Beautiful icons and golden and silver objects from 18th - 19th centuries are shown in the museum exhibition. Lunch in Sofia. A walking tour round the historical centre of one of the oldest European towns, an exciting combination of ancient and present. A visit to Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Russian church, St. George rotunda and the fortification wall.
A trip back to Varna.
